The Lion Comic Book Hero Bible

I received a copy of THE LION COMIC BOOK HERO BIBLE by Siku, Richard Thomas, and Jeff Anderson from Lion via Kregel in exchange for an honest review.

This is a beautiful book.  It explores the Bible using colorful, bright, glossy pages, the story told in comic fashion.  This is top quality.  My boyfriend reads a lot of comics, and the artwork greatly reminded me of those.

I ended up sharing this with my mom, so this will be a joint review.  She gives it five stars.  For me, it is more of a four-star book.

There are many positives.  We both found it easy to read.  I actually had trouble reading and it wasn’t until I was in fourth grade that I learned how to read – using comics!  My mom and grandmother spoiled me with comics.  The little thought bubbles weren’t overwhelming.

This comic makes the Bible stories concise.  It is a great idea to get youth interested in the Bible.  For my mom, it made her want to read the actual Bible stories so that she could read the real version.  That’s where my lower star rating comes in.  I worry that youth might not read the Bible to get the full story.  The comic also uses catchy nicknames, like Rainmaker – my mom loved this aspect – and I worry that it will make the reader forget the real name.  For example, Noah is the Rainmaker.

Overall, this is an interesting take on the Bible and one to inspire today’s youth.

My Dream Literary Collection

Ryan of Invaluable contacted me to see if I would like to be one of a few book bloggers willing to share their dream literary collection.  Um, YES!  I have always been an avid lover of literature.  The shelves in the cellar have always been filled with books.  Oh, so many books.  Those I love I want to treasure.
If you’re wondering what Invaluable.com is, an online auction market place that has a range of things up for auction daily, including collectible and first edition books. I highly recommend you check them out!

Here's the link to the first edition books page: http://www.invaluable.com/first-edition-books/sc-EWAP7WGAFQ/

Lot 572: Early The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum Copyright 1944 Grosset & Dunlap New York

The first book on my list for a dream literary collection is THE WIZARD OF OZ by L. Frank Baum.  He was born in a town close to mine, so I’ve always been interested in his works.  My mom and I love to read books together and discuss them, as well as then watch a movie if applicable, and we have been working through the Oz series for a few years.

Pride and Prejudice

My mother and I also read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, then saw every movie version we could find.  Everyone talks about the book, so we wanted to be able to add intelligently to such conversations.  It is an excellent book and there is lots of merchandise you can find based on the characters, like paper dolls!

My Bookhouse

This is a series of short stories and poems for kids.  My grandparents got this for me when I was an infant, and I have always loved them.  My fondest memories happen to be listening to my grandmother read aloud to me from the hardcover books.  They also inspired me to become an author – I would make up my own stories based on the illustrations!

The Abbess of Whitby

I received a copy of THE ABBESS OF WHITBY: A NOVEL OF HILD OF NORTHUMBRI by Jill Dalladay from Lion Fiction via Kregel Publications.

I dove into the book with great excitement because of two main reasons, but people who follow my reviews now that I LOVE historical fiction.  I still love it, but that’s not where my excitement came from.

The first reason for my extreme excitement is because I am familiar with this period in history.  I have read a lot of fictional books on it, and I love getting different takes.  I am no expert, but when I saw the book I was able to say, “Ooh, Northumbria in the seventh-century.  Cool!”  It wasn’t completely foreign to me even though I’ve never lived in that land and I wasn’t alive during that time period.

The second reason for the excitement is because the novel is about Hild.  Before reading this, I had come by chance across another Hild book in a used bookstore.  That book was okay, but it was dry and heavily laden with facts.  I did learn a little about Hild, so I was able to say, “Cool, another book about Hild!”  I’m happy to say that I liked this book better.  It was more of a story than an encyclopedia.

This book follows Hild’s life.  I was able to feel a connection to her and I am in awe of everything she was able to accomplish as a woman in England at that time.

I highly recommend THE ABBESS OF WHITBY!

MELT (Rough Romance #1)MELT by Selene Castrovilla by Selene Castrovilla

MELT is a brutal love story set against the metaphorical backdrop of The Wizard of Oz (not a retelling). When sixteen year old Dorothy moves to the small town of Highland Park, she meets, and falls for Joey – a “bad boy” who tells no one about the catastrophic domestic violence he witnesses at home. Can these two lovers survive peer pressure, Joey’s reputation, and his alcoholism? Told in dual first person, Joey's words are scattered on the page - reflecting his broken state. Dorothy is the voice of reason - until something so shattering happens that she, too, may lose her grip. Can their love endure, or will it melt away? MELT is based on true events. It is both a chilling tale of abuse, and a timeless romance. It will hit you like a punch in the face, and also seep through the cracks in your soul. Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes and Noble

No good deed goes unpunished…The tables are turned with a vengeance in this tour de force sequel to MELT. Now it’s Dorothy who is fragmented and lost, while Joey keeps the promise he made her to better himself – even though she’s gone. Joey tells his story “now ”—nearly a year after the shocking conclusion of MELT. Dorothy tells what happened “then”— in the moments and hours after the Glock dropped. This time the stakes are even higher, as Joey forces himself to move forward while Dorothy is frozen in place. But when he learns of a devastating decision, Joey races to find her before it’s too late. Truth, consequence, repercussion and modern medicine collide as pieces converge in this psychological, thrilling story, which begs the question: Can love really conquer all? Totally Wasted

Why did he have to bring a mother into this? “I realize how crazy I seem. Maybe I am nuts… but I had to try. Nothing adds up. I want to know who’s responsible. I think you want to tell me the truth.” I glanced around the restaurant, trying to sort out my thoughts. Spark had been my focus, then Judah, and then all of Osiris. I had foolishly pushed all of my other feelings under the rug. Now, none of those other distractions were here. I was left to think about everything else I had left behind. Brooklyn Hess had been a person, and people missed him.

Until the Dawn

I received a copy of UNTIL THE DAWN by Elizabeth Camden via Bethany House in exchange for an honest review. As I always say with Bethany House – I knew this would be a winner.  Not only is it historical fiction (one of my favorite genres!), but it is well written.  This story takes place on the Hudson River in 1898.  My maternal grandmother grew up on the Hudson, so that made it extra special for me.

I have reads other books by Elizabeth Camden.  This featured her trademark realistic dialogue and unforgettable characters.  In this adventure, the main character, Sophie van Riijn, wants to put up a rooftop weather station and Quentin is the owner of the land Sophie wants it on.  I loved their dynamic.  I also loved the descriptions of the land.  It made the story feel like a Gothic, which is another of my favorite genres.

As a note, this book felt different than the other Elizabeth Camden novels I have read.  I think that’s a good thing!  It made it feel fresh.

This story features mystery that will keep you riveted, as well as a beautiful romance.  The touch of religion is makes the story sweet and meaningful.  I am excited now for my next trip to the Hudson River!

Midnight Visitors

I received a copy of THE MIDNIGHT VISITORS by Juliet David from Candle Books via Kregel Publications.  It is illustrated by Jo Perry.

I am always a sucker for picture books.  I remember fondly the days of sitting upon my mother’s lap or beside my grandmother and hearing them read aloud to me.  Books about animals were my favorite. I also greatly enjoyed the books we only read around the holidays.  This book fits that criteria.

THE MIDNIGHT VISITORS is a beautiful, touching story about Christmas.  It is told from the point of view of the cow – Miriam - in the cowshed where Mary and Joseph stayed.  It is such a unique concept, but one that is so important to this time of year. I could see acting out this story with the nativity set.

Reading the story, you will delight in everyone who visits Miriam, including the three shepherds.  Having Miriam share her space is an excellent lesson for children while they learn about Jesus’s birth.

This is the perfect addition to any home library or Sunday school classroom.  You will fall in love with the words and the pictures.  It would be perfect for warm bedtime snuggles.  5 stars.

Worship Changes Everything

I received a copy of WORSHIP CHANGES EVERYTHING: EXPERIENCING GOD’S PRESENCE IN EVERY MOMENT OF LIFE by Darlene Zschech via Bethany House in exchange for an honest review.  Bethany House is one of my favorite publishers of Christian literature, so I knew this would be something to enjoy!

I do love music, but I admit to not being a music fanatic.  After reading this book, I was inspired to check out her songs.

The main theme I took away from this book is the importance of worship.  It helps us to connect with the splendor of God.  Darlene Zschech writes about worship in different aspects of our lives, for example “money” and “loving myself.”  The chapters are interspersed with relevant passages from the Bible.  There will definitely be a chapter that speaks out to you the most.

I enjoy discussing Christian literature and religious self-help books with many friends and family members.  This is a book that will rank high in our discussion groups and I can see it having a lasting home on many bookcases.  This earns five stars from me.  Listening to her songs will only help to inspire us.  I also see this being a great Christmas present for a loved one!

The Aleppo Code

I received a copy of THE ALEPPO CODE by Terry Brennan from Kregel Publications.  It is part of the Jerusalem Prophecies series.  I have read one of those books and I loved this one just as much as that one.  It is a great continuation and I will definitely look for the other novel.  Reading the others will help you with understanding the characters, but this book is enjoyable in its own way.  This is the type of series you hope won’t end.

Back to THE ALEPPO CODE.  I believe this will appeal to fans of Indiana Jones.  It has that great action vibe with a religious background.  Follow the staff of Aaron.  This is a new take on the parting of the Red Sea by Moses.  I loved how the story follows the path to obtaining the staff, a team led by Tom Bohannon.  I loved how the team gets to go around the world searching for clues they might have missed earlier.  I am a huge history fan, so I swallowed up all the archeological and history bits.  There were quite a few too!

When I came to the end of the book, I really had to pause.  I think it sounds like there will be more in the series – and I hope so!

Greenshift

I received a copy of GREENSHIFT by Heidi Ruby Miller in exchange for an honest review.  This involves the Ambasadora world.  By the way, I love saying that word.  It tickles my tongue!

I can’t wait to read more books in this series!  The author paints pictures with her words, and these pictures include romance and action.  The covers are also “out of this world.”  Sort of pun intended there.

I don’t want to reveal any spoilers, but know that this is a ride that will keep you reading.  I ended up finishing this in one sitting!

Marked by Light

I received a copy of MARKED BY LIGHT by Heidi Ruby Miller in exchange for an honest review.  I went into this with high expectations.  I read the reviews before I started.  I don’t always do this, as sometimes it makes my thoughts prejudice, but this book definitely met my expectations!  It is the first book in the Ambasadora series.

I loved the futuristic romance aspect.  Okay, I am a sucker for romance and I’m a sucker for futuristic stories.  I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but your heart will be racing and you will definitely swoon at some places!

My favorite part of this novel was the character development.  They all felt so real.  Oh, and the world-building.  Definite 5 stars there!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

AUTHOR. CHICKEN (AND DOG) LOVER. MOTHER. WIFE. DREAMER.

I’m happily married to the love of my life (don’t gag) and raising three beautiful children in the gorgeous state of Virginia. We live just outside Washington, D.C., and every day I wake up to find myself stuck in traffic trying to get there.

The horrid commute gives me plenty of time to zone out and think about my characters in full, brilliant details (I’m a safe driver; don’t worry). Stories give me a way to forget about the sometimes smelly strangers sitting next to me on the fifty mile trek into town (I pick up hitchhikers every day. True story. Check out www.slug-lines.com if you don’t believe me).

I’ve been a part of organized hitchhiking for nearly fifteen years, but that’s just one small aspect of my oh-so-large life. When I’m not working, commuting, or chasing after my three children (four if you count the man), you can usually find me outside talking to my chickens like they’re the cutest things in the world (they are), or training my amazing dogs how to herd said chickens (which they love), or curled up on the sofa with a good book (why can’t that be 100% of the time?).

I hope you love my stories (or just like them a little; that would be okay, too). And I hope that one day you find your passion, because there’s nothing in life better than doing what you love while surrounded by people you love.

Allan Westerfield Off-World

I received a copy of ALLAN WESTERFIELD OFF-WORLD by Anderson Atlas in exchange for an honest review.

This book easily received 5 stars from me.  I have read a lot of survival stories and science-fiction, and this is by far one of the best because of originality.  This was the first book I’ve read where the main character – Allan Westerfield – is a paraplegic teen.  I was on the edge of my seat as Allan works his way through figuring out this new adventure he has encountered. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but my favorite part was when Allan met the “balloon-like creature.”  Intrigued?  Check out the book for yourself!

At first I did have trouble with the present tense, but I quickly became immersed in the story.

Did I mention there are incredible illustrations?

The Magickal Birthday Treat

I received a copy of THE MAGICKAL BIRTHDAY TREAT by Sheelagh McGrath in exchange for an honest review.  This is geared toward younger teens, and I loved that about it.  I have my degree in elementary education, so I am always looking for young adult/middle grade books even though I don’t have my own classroom.  (I now teach adults)

As someone who recently lost her grandmother, I loved reading about the relationship between Jessica and her grandmother.

Without giving away any spoilers, this is a fun novel that will definitely appeal to teens!

Deadly Dance

I received a copy of DEADLY DANCE by Eliza Tilton in exchange for an honest review.  First off, the cover is beautiful, and secondly, this is part of the Daath Chronicles!  It had me right there.

This is a short story, easily read in one evening.  I recommend you start the series at the beginning and work your way through.  Be warned: this fantasy series is highly addictive!

Without giving any spoilers, this is a must read for fans of Derrick.  By the way, Lucy is my new favorite character!

A Cup of Dust

I received a copy of A CUP OF DUST by Susie Finkbeiner from Kregel in exchange for an honest review.  This is a novel that focuses on the Dust Bowl of the Great Depression.  I absolutely love history, so I completely swallowed up this story and couldn’t wait for more.  This comes highly recommended as not only historical fiction, but as a powerful story that will haunt your dreams with his beauty and rawness.

I loved the author’s voice.  I’m not sure how to describe it other than enchanting.  Susie Finkbeiner captures your attention from the first page and refuses to release you until the end.

I do read a lot of historical fiction, but I’ve only read a few children’s books about the Dust Bowl, never anything about it geared for adults.  I found that aspect even more enchanting.

As someone who recently lost her grandmother, I found the relationship between the grandmother, mom, and daughter extremely emotional.  All of these characters are ones that will stick with you.

Before I end this review, I just want to say that I wanted to leap into this book and help these characters with their suffering.

Five huge, flashing stars from me.

Fiona Thorn and the Carapacem Spell

I received a copy of FIONA THORN AND THE CARAPACEM SPELL BY Jen Barton in exchange for an honest review.  I feel awful that it took me this long to read, but maybe it’s a good thing.  My younger cousin fell in love with the cover – and the cover is spectacular – as well as the description on the back of the book.  I have been reading it out loud to her.  I read it quicker myself, but I wanted to wait to review until I had her opinion too.  This is a young adult book, and while I love young adult books, I’m now a full fledged adult.  She I still a young adult.

We both loved it.  She told me she wishes Fiona Tjorn was a real person, but she would like her for a friend.  I found this book to have plenty of role models, as well as well-rounded villains.  Many moments had me laughing and many others had me on the edge of my seat.

This is easily a five star book!

Forgiven

I received a copy of FORGIVEN: THE AMISH SCHOOL SHOOTING, A MOTHER’S LOVE, AND A STORY OF REMARKABLE GRACE by Terri Roberts with Jeanette Windle from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review.

This is such a gripping tale.  Do not expect to start reading this, put it down, and pick it back up later down.  It will haunt you until you finish it as soon as possible.

I was partly familiar with the story of the Amish school shooting.  My family and I visit Pennsylvania frequently.  We heard about it there, from many with tears in their eyes, and later on we watched a dramatized movie.  I thought the movie was done tastefully, but somehow reading about it is much more heart-wrenching.  Be prepared to cry through most parts of this book.  You will feel chilled.  The hairs will stand up along your arms.

The forward is by Beverly Lewis.  I am familiar with her Amish novels.  My mom and I are avid readers of hers.  This, although sad and traumatic, is a perfect companion to those.  It shows a different side to the happy stories, one that is very true.

FORGIVEN will leave you frozen.  I highly recommend it, but please be prepared for the rawness of this book.

99 Prayers for Children

I received a copy of 99 PRAYERS FOR CHILDREN by Juliet David and illustrated by Elina Ellis from Candle Books via Kregel in exchange for an honest review.

Now, I’m not saying that a book like this didn’t exist when I was younger, but if it had, I wish I had gotten my hands on it.  This is excellent!  My family has always been religious – there are many pastors in my family tree – and we (my mom, grandmother, and I) have always enjoyed learning more about the Bible.

This book contains prayers appropriate for children and each page includes a bright picture that is sure to capture anyone’s attention.  The prayers cover a range of topics.  I liked how specific they are, and the topics are ones that many children will be faced with.  The prayers also come with verses so that the child will seek to explore the Bible.

I can see this being read every night to a child.  I can also see children memorizing the prayers.

I will be sharing this book with my cousin.  I hope that she enjoys exploring it with her daughter.

This is a perfect gift or permanent addition to a personal library.

The Hardest Thing to Do

I received a copy of THE HARDEST THING TO DO by Penelope Wilcock from Kregel in exchange for an honest review.  It is the fourth book in the Hawk and the Dove series.  I really enjoy this series.  The other books were all captivating and left me with a warm feeling.  This one is no exception to that rule.

Welcome to the world of St. Alcuin’s Abbey.  The people are amazing and heartfelt.  Everyone is truly realistic.   I loved immersing myself in the 1300s.  It isn’t something you get to do every day, but it is something Penelope Wilcox will help you to do with each of her books.

My favorite part of all is getting inside of the characters’ heads to experience their emotions, reasoning, and thoughts of The One.  There is bound to be one character, if not more, in this story who will enchant you to no end.  If you’re like me, you will end up liking everyone as you read about their strengths and weaknesses.  It will also inspire deep religious conversations.  Five stars!

I highly recommend this series and in particular this installment.  The Hawk and the Dove series is one to treasure on your bookshelves.

On This Foundation

I received a copy of ON THIS FOUNDATION by Lynn Austin from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review.  This is the third book in the Restoration Chronicles.

I have no read too many books by Lynn Austin, but of those I have, I have always greatly enjoyed them.  I was thrilled to receive this copy, especially as I had already read book 2 – and am looking forward to finding a copy of book 1 so that I can read that one as well.  Although this is part of a series, I don’t feel that you need to read the other books in order to fully enjoy this one.

This is religious fiction at its finest, although I do prefer the author’s historical fiction.  This book really makes you think and it also makes you want to reread the Bible, in particular the Old Testament.  It brings to life Nehemiah and Jerusalem in a new, fresh way.

This comes with five stars and is highly recommended!  I am passing this on to my family, who I know will greatly enjoy this novel.  I have been studying the Bible more frequently with my mother and we both enjoy novels that help to bring to life what we are reading about.

Tallas

TALLAS was way too good to put down!  I ended up reading it in one night, but didn’t get a chance to review it until now.

TALLAS is a fantasy dystopian by Cathrina Constantine.  The action scenes are superb.  So often a good premise and engaging characters fall short because of a struggling action sequence.  Cathrina is able to keep you on the edge of your seat.

I highly recommend this to my dystopian fans.  It is one of the best dystopian novels I have ever read.  So often they feel cliché.  This is fresh and new.

I was provided a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Like the kind of old-school, centuries-old curse that runs in royal families. Every firstborn son is doomed to die on his eighteenth birthday—and Reese’s is coming up fast. Bummer. He tries to distract himself from his inevitable death…only to find the one person who can save him. Aster doesn’t know that the hot Dutch guy she’s just met needs her help–or that he’s about to die. But worst of all…she doesn’t know that her new gift comes with dark, dark consequences that can harm everyone she loves. Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Excerpt from TOUCHING FATE

The spell was broken when some partiers ran up the beach screaming and laughing. Aster turned in the direction of the noise and spotted Reese standing there. He waved. A moronic move, he reprimanded himself. Strolling up the beach James Bond-style would have been better, but instead, struggling in the sand, he headed for her. He decided if she moved toward him as well, it would be proof that she was attracted to him. Aster spun around and faced the ocean again. Reese stopped. She was still angry with him. Just when he made up his mind to leave her alone, she started down the beach toward him. “Hi,” she said, staring up at him. The golden specks in her eyes were like stardust glinting in the low-lying sun. “What are you doing here?” “Leah invited Jan, and he brought me along.” “I see.” “Well, I didn’t put up a struggle. I have to admit, I was hoping to see you.” He held out the aster. “This is for you. A peace offering. One simple flower can mean so much more than a bunch, don’t you agree?” A shocked expression crossed her face, and Reese thought he had blown it. But then she gave him a sweet smile and took the flower from him. “Stolen ones are even better.” “Well, in all honesty, it was a spur-of-the-moment decision. A gentleman doesn’t court a lady without bringing a gift.” “So you’re courting me?” She tried unsuccessfully not to smile. It was rather fetching, her pink glossed lips twitching at the effort. “You don’t even know anything about me.” “Well, that is the point of dating, isn’t it? To get to know each other?” “I’m not sure.” When the silence between them got uncomfortable, she lowered her head and picked at the stem of the flower. “Not sure, huh?” This girl was a hard nut to crack. Reese got an idea. “How about we play a game?” She looked back up at him. “What kind of game?” “One where I tell you something about me, then you tell me something about yourself.” “Sure, why not?” She twirled around and padded across the beach, lifting up sand with her toes and flicking it into the air in front of her. “You go first.” “All right, then,” he said, keeping pace with her. “My family lives in a castle just outside of Amsterdam, complete with towers and turrets. It’s been in the family for generations. We only live in a few rooms. The rest of the place is open for tours. It helps pay for the upkeep and taxes.” “Really?” She knotted her fingers behind her back. “Does that mean you’re royal?” “No. But my father is a count.” He hated talking about his lineage. “It’s just a title,” he said, as if it wasn’t a big deal, which it wasn’t, at least to him. “That’s pretty awesome,” she said. “Now you.”

Her fondest memories growing up are of her eccentric, Irish grandmother’s animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. So it was only fitting that she would choose to write stories with a bend toward the fantastical. When she’s not writing or hanging out with her family, she haunts libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops, or reads someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).

Alice Takes Back Wonderland

I received a copy of ALICE TAKES BACK WONDERLAND by David D. Hammons from Curiosity Quills Press in exchange for an honest review.

This is an excellent story reminiscent of the Alice movie by Disney and it keeps true to the original books.  It also felt like the Once Upon a Time series.  A term I would use for this work is “literary mashup.”  Truly delightful.  Everything blended smoothly.

I don’t want to give any spoilers, but this is a book I highly recommend to fairy tale fanatics.

Pop Travel

I received a copy of POP TRAVEL by Tara Tyler from Curiosity Quills Press in exchange for an honest review.

What a story!  Murders.  Technology.  The future.  Mystery.  This is really more of a mystery novel with a lead, Cooper, who you can root for with relish.

I loved the idea of people anywhere in the world.  I would enjoy doing that and I know many others would too.  The thriller aspect kept me on my toes and the mystery kept me guessing.

Simulation

I received a copy of SIMULATION by Tara Tyler from Curiosity Quills Press in exchange for an honest review.

In two words: MARVELOUS ENTERTAINMENT.  I happened to be sick, so it was perfect entertainment for laying on the couch with a cup of tea beside me.

This is the second book in the Pop Travel series.  It takes place in the future – 2082 to be precise.  I love reading stories that take place in the future because the author’s imagination always blows me away.  This book was no exception.

I was worried that this wouldn’t be as wonderful as book one, but it didn’t suffer from sequel syndrome, where the sequels never live up to the first.

Hour of Mischief

I love a book with a strong heroine.  Add in some magic and it is a winner for me.  HOUR OF MISCHIEF by Aimee Hyndman had all that for me.  The steampunk aspects were an added bonus.

The setting is spectacular.  Other than the steampunk, I enjoyed reading about the gods.  Highly recommended.

I was provided a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt

Placing my hand behind her head, I gently roll her over and position myself on top of her. I’m going to make this girl feel the depths of my love if it’s the last thing I do in my life. “I love you,” I whisper a breath away from her lips then cover her mouth with mine. I take my time kissing her then pull away slightly. “I’m going to love you and only you until the day I take my last breath,” I tell her softly before meeting her lips again, claiming them with mine. This time, I kiss her longer but still don’t breach her mouth with my tongue.  Again, I pull away just a bit but whisper into her mouth in hopes that my words will not only weave themselves into her mind but also into her heart. “Love is love. It comes without strings, without obligation, without judgment, without fear. It is unconditional and all-consuming. I couldn’t separate my love from you if I tried, so please stop trying to push me away because I’m not going anywhere, baby.”

The Methuselah Project

I received a copy of THE METHUSELAH PROJECT by Rick Barry from Kregel Publications in exchange for an honest review.

The cover is top-notch.  My dad was present when I opened the package.  He saw the airplane on the cover, threw out a bunch of facts about that model, and then asked if he could read it when I was done.  (Of course he can!  He will be getting it next)  Later on a friend saw it sitting on the stairs and fell in love with the male model’s eyes.  She asked if she could read it.  Sorry, you’re getting it after my dad!

For my own opinions, I really enjoyed the novel.  I loved the mixture of history with the contemporary.  There is also some romance mixed in, the kind that makes you say “awe” out loud.  I stumbled over some of the pilot lingo, but I know people like my dad will revel in it.

My favorite part of the novel is Roger’s reaction to modern day things.  Often I was laughing out loud.

My friend who liked the model’s eyes read the back cover and related the book to captain America.  After reading it, I do sort of see a resemblance, but this book has much more depth.

 Excerpt from Butterfly Ginger

Parked in front of his house, Nate sat in the driver’s seat of his truck and gripped the steering wheel. Why did I think this was a good idea? He watched Lila chop onions in silhouette through the kitchen windows. “What’s the matter?” Blythe asked beside him. “Are you losing your nerve?” Nate shrugged. “Maybe.” Of course, she laughed. He’d made her laugh every day for two weeks straight, and he couldn’t get enough of it. The sound energized him every time he heard it. Clear water, sunlight, and Blythe’s laugh must have been made of the same elements. “Too bad,” she teased, poking him in the ribs and making him flinch. “It wouldn’t be fair to bail. You’ve already met Seth and Calvin — and my dad!” “Don’t forget Phoebe the Flatulent.” Nate made a grab to tickle her waist, but she jumped back and swatted his hand away. “Hey! Don’t make fun of my dog!” she protested, trying to disguise her laughter as outrage. “It’s not her fault Seth fed her Brussel sprouts.” “Your brothers are a trip,” Nate said, shaking his head. Blythe rolled her eyes. “Yeah, it was great fun when they showed you that picture from eighth grade. Braces and headgear? I’ll never forgive them.” Nate shrugged. “Well, the braces worked.” He reached for her again, and this time she let him catch her. “You have a killer smile.” “Ugh. Really? That’s the best you’ve got?” Blythe arched a brow at his pathetic attempts at flirting. “No,” he whispered. “Come here.” Nate pulled her into his arms, and she tilted her chin up to meet his kiss, like she did every time. Her lips were so soft, and when he reached up to cradle her face, she opened her mouth to him. It seemed impossible that she wanted to kiss him as much as he wanted to kiss her, yet she was just as eager, just as hungry, and it drove him crazy. He could kiss her all day. It had become his new religion. “Nate?” she whispered against his lips. “Can your mom see us?” “No…” he murmured, moving his mouth to her neck, inhaling the scent of butterfly ginger in her hair. “You smell so good…” Blythe stilled against him. “I think she can see us.” Blythe pushed herself away and sat bolt upright. “Oh my God.” Indeed, Lila had moved to the sink just in front of the windows. She wasn’t looking at the truck, but he knew that meant nothing. “Um… Yeah, she can see us,” Nate admitted, shrugging awkwardly. “But she won’t care. She’s not like that.” Blythe shot him an exasperated look, and he realized that he’d screwed up. “I care, Nate! I don’t want her to think I’m some slut!” The word was like a blow. “No… No,” he said, silently cursing himself. “She’d never think that. And neither would Richland.” Nate took a deep breath and decided to level with her. “Blythe, I’ve never brought a girl home,” he admitted. He watched her eyes widen just a little. “Never?” she whispered. Nate shook his head. “Never. Sometimes… sometimes people are uncomfortable around Lila. I was always afraid it would be too weird.” He gave a weak laugh. “Hell, I’m still afraid, but with you, I want to try.” Blythe’s blue eyes glinted with her smile. “You’re different,” Nate said, shrugging. “I’ve never met a girl like you. Someone who made me so comfortable. And Lila and Richland know that. They know you’re special. They’d never think you were a… a slut.” Nate shook the word from his mouth. He hated even saying it around her. The thought of someone calling her that made him angry. “Thank you,” she said, grabbing both his hands and weaving her fingers through his. “Thank you for inviting me. Yeah, I’m nervous about meeting your mom, too, but not because of her disability. Because she’s your mom.” This was why he’d thought it was a good idea to bring her home. Blythe was amazing. She would accept Lila for who she was, which was more than most of his friends from high school had managed. “Then let’s go,” he said, opening the door of his truck. Blythe hopped down from her side before he could do the gentlemanly thing and get her door for her, but he clasped her by the hand and squeezed it as they climbed the front steps.
